5 Steps to Identify and Locate a Leak in Your Roof

Roof Pros • November 9, 2020
One of the worst nightmares a homeowner can ever face is a leaky roof. Not only is the problem itself an annoying issue to fix, but a leaky roof can also lead to even more problems, such as mold growth. Unfortunately, just fixing the roof will not address any of the other possible issues, which will only worsen over time.

That being said, if you suddenly find puddles of water in your living space, you might be wondering what you can do to locate the leak. In this article, we will help you do just that!

Step 1. Confirm that it is from a roof leak

There are many causes of leaks in your home, and the roof is just one of them. Other possible sources include your plumbing problems, damaged roof drains, and even condensation. For that reason, it is vital that you first ensure that the leak is indeed coming from the roof. For example, if you find a leak in your home, but it only appears when it rains, the problem is likely the roof.

Step 2. Measure the pool of water

Once you have determined the roof to be the source of the leak, measure the size of the leak itself. The idea is to determine the exact location of the leak in your roof. To make your life easier, use two fixed points that extend into the attic, such as a chimney or even a wall.

Step 3. Check the underside of the roof

With the measurements jotted down, go to the attic, and apply the measurements you have taken. From there, check the underside of the roof and whether it corresponds to the measurements you took. Note that the leak might not exactly match the measurements, so check a little further if you need to.

Step 4. Measure the location of the leak

Once you have found the leak, measure its location once more, again using two fixed points like a chimney and the roof. This is so that when you do check the top of the roof, you know exactly where to look.

Step 5. Check the top of the roof

Now that you are on the roof, you can find the leak's approximate location with the measurements you have taken earlier. Work from the center of the measurements then slowly outwards to cover the entire area. While you are at it, look at other possible places where water might be seeping from the roof.

Conclusion

By following the steps above, you can quickly identify the source of the leak in your roof and have the repairs done. That being said, roof repairs can be potentially dangerous, especially when dealing with sloped designs. If you do not have any safety equipment or experience working on your roof, it is always better to hire a professional. In fact, they can do the job of locating the leak, examine the roof for additional issues, and fixing the roof for you, allowing you to sit down comfortably while your roof is being repaired.
